The shooting of a dog between 9 and 9:45 a.m. Monday in the 700 block of Carpenters Chapel Road in Mosheim is under investigation by the sheriff’s department.

The owner said he lets his two dogs out each morning before he goes to work. When his wife was leaving for work, she saw one of the dogs, a 9-month-old male Rottweiler, lying at the edge of the road and unable to get up, Deputy Anthony Pruitt said in a report.

The dog had been shot in the stomach area and the woman summoned her husband, who called the sheriff’s department.

The owner told deputies he did not hear any gunshots that morning and didn’t know who shot the dog. He said it does not chase cattle. Deputies looked at the wound and found it had apparently been shot with a small-caliber rifle, the report said.

The owner took the dog to a veterinarian to see if it could be saved, the report said.
